This program features a presentation by Charlie Vinz, given as part of the November 2014 Sustainability Through Historic Salvage Conference in Iowa City. Charlie Vinz is the Director of Product Development and Sales at Rebuilding Exchange, Chicago. The mission of Rebuilding Exchange is to create a market for reclaimed building materials. This is accomplished by diverting materials from landfills and making them accessible for reuse through the retail warehouse, by promoting sustainable deconstruction practices, by providing education and job training programs, and by creating innovative models for sustainable reuse. Vinz will discuss Rebuilding Exchange in Chicago, a nonprofit founded in 2009 that promotes sustainable deconstruction and provides job training for this emerging green market. He also describes the organization’s innovative approach to landfill diversion by using building materials for a multitude of purposes. The Sustainability Through Historic Salvage Conference was sponsored by Friends of Historic Preservation, The University of Iowa, the State Historical Society of Iowa, FEMA, and by Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Additional presentations from this symposium were recorded and will become available for viewing in upcoming weeks.A complete list of available streaming videos can be found at citychannel4.com/video
