This program features presentations by Rod Lehnertz and Bob Yapp as part of the November 2014 Sustainability Through Historic Salvage Conference in Iowa City. The first presentation features a presentation entitled, 'The Role of Historic Salvage in the University of Iowa's Flood Recovery.' Rod Lehnertz, University of Iowa Facilities Management Director of Planning, De-sign & Construction and University Architect, has been instrumental in planning and implementing the repair and rebuilding of the University of Iowa campus in the wake of recent floods. Lehnertz is responsible for leading the rehabilitation of some of the UI's most iconic buildings, as well as managing the construction of new buildings to replace those too damaged to repair. His unique perspective includes a strong appreciation of history, but also a recognition that change must be incorporated into campus planning in order to build resiliency. Mr. Lehnertz talks about the UI's partnership with FEMA, State Historical Society of Iowa, and the Friends of Historic Preservation (Iowa City), why the symposium is being held, the importance of historic salvage and how historic salvage is part of the University of Iowa's flood recovery process. The second presentation features a keynote presentation entitled, 'Architectural Salvage: the Ultimate Recycling.' Presenter Bob Yapp is the president of Preservation Resources, Inc. (PRI). PRI is a multi-tiered, national historic preservation consulting firm specializing in: social policy; neighborhood revitalization; historic preservation commission training; hands-on field training for contractors and historic building owners; Main Street training; creation of how-to preservation materials for print and web based training; creation of historic preservation design guidelines and ordinances; and development of specifications for historic preservation rehabilitation projects. Bob is a founding member of The National Window Preservation Standards Collaborative. His first book, About Your House, was published by Bay Books in December 1997 and he is a co-author of The National Window Preservation Standards published in July, 2013. His talk walks the audience through all the considerations a community must think about before a historic property is demolished - ways to prevent demolition, data collection, and the why-to & how-to involved in recycling important historic materials. The Sustainability Through Historic Salvage Conference was sponsored by Friends of Historic Preservation, The University of Iowa, the State Historical Society of Iowa, FEMA, and by Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Additional presentations from this symposium were recorded and will become available for
