This Water Summit is the first collective meeting of local government stakeholders to discuss the need for a proposed Polk Regional Water Cooperative, an entity that would ensure adequate future water supplies throughout all of Polk County.
Currently, more than 90 percent of all the public water supply in Polk County comes from the aquifer system. As Polk County continues to grow, there is a need to identify new sustainable water resources to meet increased demand. The State Legislature and the Southwest Florida Management District have also made it clear that they plan to prioritize work with regional entities, such as the Polk Regional Water Cooperative, in the future.
Speakers at the Summit include George Lindsey, Chairman of the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, Paul Senft, SWFWMD Governing Board Member, Danny Kushmer, Senior Government Affairs Manager for SWFWMD and Ed de la Parte, Managing Partner, de la Parte and Gilbert, a consultant to the Cooperative. Former Pinellas County Commissioner Steve Seibert will moderate the panel. The program also includes a question and answer session.
The Water Summit was held at Lake Eva Banquet Hall, in Haines City.
