Obermann Afternoons is an informal speaker series, sponsored by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, featuring the work of UI faculty and research staff, often highlighting issues of current importance. This program features a presentation entitled, 'The City as Classroom with Dave Gould'. The aim of education - regardless of where students fall on the academic trajectory - should be at least as much about connecting to a social purpose as jockeying for position in the race to succeed. This presentation explores how an educator and his students arrived at this conclusion, and the academic experiments they have shared as a result. David Gould served as the Associate Director of Professional Student Development in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and developed a number of courses, including Life Design: Building Your Future and Reimagining Downtown. In 2012, he received the Iowa Outstanding Staff Award, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Star Volunteer Award. In 2013, his Reimagining Downtown students were invited by Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh to participate in the Downtown Project, which is 'a group of passionate people committed to helping transform Las Vegas into the most community-focused large city in the world.' For 2013-14, he developed his own ideas for community renewal in Las Vegas as part of this project. Future Obermann Afternoons will highlight the work of recent and current Obermann Scholars, and will include an examination of how rankings effect higher education and what social entrepreneurship and higher education can learn from each other.
